NMiBB To Perform in Grayling
The Northern Michigan Brass Band (NMiBB) will present a concert as part of its ongoing series Something for Everyone on Sunday, November 10 in the Joseph L. Stripe Auditorium at Grayling High School. The program will begin at 3:00 P.M. and feature brass players from the Grayling High School Band joining NMiBB in a performance of Star Lake, a stirring march by British composer Eric Ball. Now in its fourteenth year of operation, NMiBB will also perform a program of original and transcribed brass band music by Edward Gregson, W.A. Mozart, Joseph Horovitz, Johann Strauss, George Gershwin, Carl Teike, Evelyn Glennie, Jacob de Haan and Cole Porter along with a medley of classic Big Band Era jazz tunes. The featured soloists will be NMiBB founding member Beverly Isenbarger in a performance of the Rondo from Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4, and NMiBB founding member Ev Wujcik in a flugelhorn rendition of Cole Porter’s I’ve Got You Under My Skin. General admission is $10 with students admitted free. Proceeds will go, in part, to support the Grayling Viking Band Program. Tickets will be available at the door.
According to NMiBB Conductor Ralph Schweigert, the idea for a series of programs based on the concept “Something for Everyone,” originates from the fact that not everyone listens to music in the same way. “Some people listen with their heads, others with their hearts and still others with their feet,” Schweigert said. “I try to include music that will appeal to all these listening styles on any one program.”
The program will also include Prelude for an Occasion, a stirring opening fanfare by British composer Edward Gregson; Sinfonietta, a major three movement composition for brass band by British composer Joseph Horovitz; A Little Prayer by Evelyn Glennie; Thunder and Lightning, an up-tempo polka by Johann Strauss, Jr.; Fascinating Rhythm by George Gershwin; Old Comrades, a classic German march by Carl Teike, and a medley of classic swing tunes including In The Mood, Jumpin’ at the Woodside, Mood Indigo, Opus One, and Take the ‘A’ Train. In honor of Veterans Day, NMiBB will also play a very beautiful and very moving setting of the official U.S. Navy hymn Eternal Father by Jacob de Haan.
Centered in Gaylord, the all-volunteer NMiBB has attracted enthusiastic adult brass players from across northern Michigan from Alpena to Traverse City and north to Mackinaw City, including Petoskey, Charlevoix, Bellaire, Interlochen, East Jordan, Beulah and Gaylord. Since the band was organized in January of 1999, it has presented over 75 concerts in various venues throughout Michigan.
